Spirituality

Sorry, champ. But this, too, shall pass

18 Feb 2009, 0000 hrs IST, SIMANTA MOHANTY

At the first Grand Slam tennis event of 2009, the Australian Open, one got to see sublime tennis as well as the depth of the human soul in the

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer (Reuters photo)

final that pitted Rafael Nadal with Roger Federer.

For the record, Federer lost a classic to Nadal; the match went the complete five-set distance and will, undoubtedly, be a manual for aspiring tennis players the world over. The behaviour of the two champions at the presentation ceremony after the match, however, should speak to the heart of every human being.

As Federer, carrying his runner-up shield, choked on his tears, the pain on the face of Nadal was there for all to see. The latter's body language as he accepted the champion'strophy, was muted. There have been many poignant and moving spectacles of triumph in sports.

That Sunday afternoon at the Rod Laver arena in Melbourne the stage expanded to show us the greatness of the human spirit. Here then were two men, joined not just by sporting history, but by mutual recognition of the effort it has taken to mould themselves into the champions they are. They know only too well the hours of grinding, pounding training that make their routine, day after day.

These are two men who recognise that behind every champion stand many shadows mocking their passion and ability. These are two men joined by deep respect for each other's pain and talent. Boxer Muhammad Ali once said, "Champions are made from something they have deep inside them a desire, a dream, a vision." Nadal and Federer are two champions who on that stage showed their essential connectedness.
Their rivalry is already being hailed as one of the greatest ever in the game, but that did not stop Federer from weeping openly at his loss. He was not afraid to show his wound to his great rival, to tell him that all his sacrifices in preparing for thetournament had come to naught. He did not keep a brave face. Sans ego, the vulnerable Federer touched a chord in all of us. Nadal not only saw the wound, he felt it.

A Sanskrit shloka says "Just as the fruit laden tree bows low, so does the accomplished person in humility." Never has one heard of a champion apologising to the defeated rival for his win. Nadal has done that on a number of occasions. He said sorry to Federer at the post-match press conference and immediately after collecting the championship trophy from Rod Laver. The new Australian Open champion may be just 22 years old, but he has the humility of the truly wise.

Osho tells the story of a king who asked a rishi for a powerful talisman. The rishi gave him a ring containing a folded slip of paper and asked him to open it when faced with extraordinary situations, whether of tragedy or triumph. The talisman, the rishi told the king, will keep him grounded; it would help him keep his head in any situation. The king had many occasions to experience the power of the writing on the paper during a long reign. The paper had on it a simple line: "This, too, shall pass".

Events and emotions in our life stay alive only in our memory. What remains is the one who experiences, unmoved and unmovable, the one witness, the Presence within us. The great drama of the Federer-Nadal rivalry brings alive the power of the talisman's words. Both players have promised to be back next year. For both, the moment this year, too, shall pass. Just as many triumphs and defeats have

Spiritual Renaissance

Rohan Swamy

Posted: Feb 15, 2009 at 0358 hrs IST

"My whole teaching consists of two words, meditation and love."- Osho
Skeptics might not be fascinated by the ideologies of spiritual teachers. In fact they might even question the same, as they believe in following a set of written rules with firm devotion. However, no matter how much they deny or even question these ideas one cannot help but admire the fact that more and more people are gradually veering towards spirituality to question the purpose of their existence.
Their following might not be very vocal and still be more of a underground practice for some, but the fact is that more and more of the youth of the nation are looking at spiritualism to get rid of their inner most demons.
Sagar Upadhaya, a businessman and an Oshoite, says, "I began following Osho ever since I was eight years old. The reason as to why I was so fascinated about his teachings was because he spoke about transforming a person's soul. Ironically I was saddened to see that most people saw religion as a means to hide their own discrepancies and shortcomings. It was a reason why I was more veered towards spirituality and finding oneself than blindly following certain set of rules and traditions."
Seconding this chain of thought is Tushar Patil, an engineer, who says, "The difference between religion and spirituality that I found was that religion does not allow a person to question a particular thought, idea or belief. If anyone tried doing it that person would either be branded as a heretic or an atheist. However spirituality teaches a person to be independent and be more responsible for his or her own actions."
The question of youngsters veering towards spirituality and more importantly towards spiritual leaders might not go down well with people from the old school of thought, with some deeming it to be hogwash, however a certain faction of the society chooses to disagree, K Natasha, a software professional and an avid follower of the Art of Living course says, "I guess with the growing amount of stress in our lives we all need to unwind in our own ways, some people might find solace in going to the temple, I find mine by meditating and remaining silent for extended periods of time. It not only calms me down but also allays my fears and reduces my negativity."
"Probably one of the more important reasons as to why youngsters are veering towards spirituality as a way of life is because they are unable to vent out their feelings about various issues. Moreover they also get this feeling that age-old ideas are tying them down and are not allowing them to start taking decisions for themselves. I myself follow yoga and meditation to lighten my mind and also it is a good way to introspect and spend some time on oneself", adds Nikhil Khatri, an MBA student.
While the idea of questioning actions, and age-old traditions is a bitter pill to swallow for most, the trend of youngsters opting for spirituality as a means of life might just aggravate their agony.

  Osho Online OSHO TIMES

A Friend writes "

Dear Reader,

The OSHO Times has been a beautiful tool for sharing the Osho vision and a representative of OSHO International Meditation Resort. It has been one of the pillars of the work since the time when there was no internet or digital technology. And at that time, there was no interest in the paper industry to carry Osho, just foolish scandals.

Now all that has changed. The print media today has now embraced Osho. By independent measures Osho content is in front of more than 100 million people in India every month through newspapers and magazines alone.

Moreover, we are in the electronic age of digital technology. Osho is available on the net through the monthly newsletter and through our website www.osho.com which had 10 million visitors in 2008. The projections for the new osho.com are that the number of visitors will double from 10 to 20 million quickly because of its more advanced technology. In particular, India is now one of the fastest growth countries in terms of visitors to osho.com, and also has some of the fastest growth rates in new internet connections in the world today.

As we move in this time of crisis, so accurately described by Osho long in advance, we see clearly in front of us the ecological aspect of that crisis. Much of the air we breathe is affected by a brown cloud of pollution overhead, affecting particularly every metro. To continue to cut the trees we need to breathe for a publication that speaks above all about awareness and responsibility seems no longer appropriate.

As Osho points out, “Now there is a possibility to create a new vision of technology and nature in communion, hand in hand together.”

So, instead of cutting all those trees, we are going to make this same OSHO Timescontent available digitally, which will be beautiful presented in the newsletter and on the website in a new format. This way will be reaching out to millions more people much more easily, and in an ecologically responsible way. The August 2009 issue will be our last paper print issue.

This of course will leave the OSHO Times team time to channel its creativity and skills into producing more OSHO books and completing the target of translating all the original Hindi books into "

Hitlar sent a psychoanalyst to France, before he attacked the country, to find out how the youth of France walked on the roads - whether their backbone was straight  or bent when they were walking. The psychoanalyst reported that they were bent as they walked. Hitlar said," Then there won't be any problem conquering them." Have you seen the soldier of Hitlar? The whole Germany walks with backbone straight. When somebody is filled with hope, his backbone becomes straight. When somebody is down with hopelessness, his backbone is bent. The backbone does not get bent in old age because the body becomes weak, it becomes bent more because the life is filled with hopelessness. Death is visible and there is no future.

Osho Meditation News Osho on Scientology

Osho, What is your opinion of scientology? It is fantastic…I mean bullshit, utter bullshit! Be aware of such stupid  things. They move in the world in the name of science because science has credit,  so any kind of stupidity can pretend to be scientific. And people are very much  impressed by words: scientology. People are very much impressed by shining  gadgets, instruments…. Man is so unaware and unconscious of himself that  he falls a victim to anything! You just need to propagate it, advertise it –  and our century has the most efficient media to advertise, to propagate things. Scientology is nothing but a kind of hypnosis – it can hypnotize you. And  real religion is just the opposite: it is dehypnosis. You are already hypnotized,  you don’t need any scientology anymore. You need a process of dehypnosis, you need deconditioning, you need to come out of all kinds of ideologies. Scientology  is an ideology. It talks in terms of science, and science has great appeal.  Science is the modern superstition. The modern man is immediately impressed if you bring science in. So anything  and everything has to be proved scientifically. And there are quacks who even  go on proving God scientifically, and who are trying to measure states of meditation  – as if meditation can be measured. Whatsoever you can measure will be  mind; no-mind cannot be measured. All your alpha waves, etcetera, are not going  to help. They can only go to a certain extent in the mind. But meditation begins  only where mind ends. [To read more, click on "read more" below]

  Osho Multimedia DEPRESSION 2

A Friend writes "

"YOU CAN NOT BE DEPRESSED FOR LONG"

If you are depressed, so be depressed; don't do anything. And what can you do? Whatsoever you do will be done out of depression, so it will create more confusion. You can pray to God, but you will pray so depressingly that you will even make God depressed through your prayers. Don't do that violence. Your prayer is going to be a depressed prayer.

You can meditate, but what will you do? The depression will be there. Because you are depressed, whatsoever you do the depression will follow. More confusion will be created, more frustration, because you cannot succeed. And when you cannot succeed you will feel more depressed, and this can go on ad infinitum. It is better to remain with the first depression than to create a second circle and then a third circle. Remain with the first; the original is beautiful. The second will be false, and the third will be a far-off echo. Don't create these. The first is beautiful. You are depressed, so this is how existence is happening to you at this moment.

You are depressed, so remain with it. Wait and watch. You cannot be depressed for long because in this world nothing is permanent. This world is a flux. This world cannot change its basic law for you so that you remain depressed forever. Nothing is here forever; everything is moving and changing. Existence is a river; it cannot stop for you, just for you, so that you remain depressed forever. It is moving, it has already moved. If you look at your depression, you will feel that even your depression is not the same the next moment; it is different, it is changing. Just watch, remain with it and don't do anything. This is how transformation happens through non-doing. This is what is meant by "effortless effort."

  Osho Multiversity TENSION

A Friend writes "OSHO ON T  E  N  S  I  O  N

The original source of all tension is becoming. One is always trying to be something; no one is at ease with himself as he is. The being is not accepted, the being is denied, and something else is taken as an ideal to become. So the basic tension is always between that which you are and that which you long to become. You desire to become something. Tension means that you are not pleased with what you are, and you long to be what you are not. Tension is created between these two. What you desire to become is irrelevant. If you want to become wealthy, famous, powerful, or even if you want to be free, liberated, to be divine, immortal, even if you long for salvation, “ moksha” then too the tension will be there. Anything that is desired as something to be fulfilled in the future, against you as you are, creates tension. The more impossible the ideal is, the more tension there is bound to be. So a person who is a materialist is ordinarily not so tense as one who is religious, because the religious person is longing for the impossible, for the far-off. The distance is so great that only a great tension can fill the gap. Tension means a gap between what you are and what you want to be. If the gap is great, the tension will be great. If the gap is small, the tension will be small. And if there is no gap at all, it means you are satisfied with what you are. In other words, you do not long to be anything other than what you are. Then your mind exists ‘in the moment’. There is nothing to be tense about; you are at ease with yourself. You are in the Tao. To me, if there is no gap you are religious; you are in the ‘dharma’. The gap can have many layers. If the longing is physical, the tension will be physical. When you seek a particular body, a particular shape – if you long for something other than what you are on a physical level – then there is tension in your physical body. One wants to be more beautiful. Now your body becomes tense. This tension begins at your first body, the physiological, but if it is insistent, constant, it may go deeper and spread to the other layers of your being. If you are longing for psychic powers, then the tension begins at the psychic level and spreads. The spreading is just like when you throw a stone in the lake. It drops at a particular point, but the vibrations created by it will go on spreading into the infinite. So tension may start from any one of your seven bodies, but the original source is always the same: the gap between a state that is and a state that is longed for. If you have a particular type of mind and you want to change it, transform it – if you want to be more clever, more intelligent – then tension is created. Only if we accept ourselves totally is there no tension. This total acceptance is the miracle, the only miracle. To find a person who has accepted himself totally is the only surprising thing. Existence itself is non-tense. Tension is always because of hypothetical, non-existential possibilities. In the present there is no tension; tension is always future-oriented. It comes from the imagination. You can imagine yourself as something other than you are. This potential that has been imagined will create tension. So the more imaginative a person is, the more tension is a possibility. Then the imagination has become destructive. Imagination can also become constructive, creative. If your whole capacity to imagine is focused in the present, in the moment, not in the future, then you can begin to see your existence as poetry. Your imagination is not creating a longing; it is being used in living. This living in the present is beyond tension. Animals are not tense, trees are not tense, because they do not have the capacity to imagine. They are below tension, not beyond it. Their tension is just a potentiality; it has not become actual. They are evolving. A moment will come when tension will explode in their beings and they will begin to long for the future. It is bound to happen. The imagination becomes active. The first thing the imagination becomes active about is the future. You create images and because there are no corresponding realities, you go on creating more and more images. But as far as the present is concerned, you cannot ordinarily conceive of the imagination in relation to it. How can you be imaginative in the present? There seems to be no need. This point must be understood. "

Shemaroo in talks with PE players to raise cash

NEW DELHI: After shelving plans to raise funds last year, movie distribution and home-video player Shemaroo Entertainment is looking at raising money through equity dilution. The company has re-initiated talks with private equity players.

Shemaroo Entertainment director Hiren Gada said: “Due to slowdown in the market, we had deferred our plans to raise money. However, we have resumed preliminary talks with private equity players to raise money to fund our expansion plans.” Mr Gada added that the company is looking at a combination of debt and equity, and did not rule out a public offer. As per industry sources, the company is looking at raising Rs 150-100 crore for expansions.

The company, which forayed into animation with 2D musical film Ghatothkach, is aggressively looking at animation full-feature movies. “We plan to release two animation projects every year. We are looking at small-budget animation projects that can be timed with kid’s vacations to get returns on such projects,” he said. Besides animation, the company is looking at producing three-four live action movies per year. Mr Gada added that the four of its movies will go on floor in the next six months.

Shemaroo is additionally looking at tapping non-film content for the home-video market. The company has recently released DVDs on Osho and yoga, and believes such content has huge potential

A letter from Shakura to the Caravanserai

Beloved friends,

I would like to share with you my experience of "A Death Celebration That Was Not Really a Death Celebration" that happened on May 25th, 2008 at Osho Miasto in Italy.

Ma Yoga Sudha, a dear friend of mine, was told two weeks ago by her doctors that they have done all they can and that she has maybe a  few weeks left to live. She decided that she wanted a celebration that she could participate in. In synchronicity, Prasad and Leela phoned her and told her that they had this idea to have a celebration honoring life and death, both. And Osho Miasto was happy to host the event.

All day Sunday, Miasto was a meeting place of friends arriving from all corners of Italy, and some from other parts of the world as  well. After White Robe and a dinner- celebration for almost 300, we  started

lining up to go back to Miasto's Buddha Hall, not really knowing   what to expect...how was it going to be...in what state would we find her... because nobody had seen her yet. Excitement, nervousness, reverence in the air...

We entered the hall, and there she was sitting up on a small podium on a big, comfortable chair with Leela ( formally Waduda) next to her, whose hand Sudha keept reaching for; also facing us were Prasad (formally Wadud), Sudha's two caretakers, Aneeta and Peter Makena (Anubhavo)

and all the Miasto musicians leading us in singing together - Namaste!

Everyone was immediately deeply touched- smiles and tears, waving, blowing kisses, touching their hearts and walking on to fill the hall until it was "

Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic : REVIEW
Books - www.wingsbookstore.com
Crystal Nyerick
Wings Coffee Bar Manager :

I have just finished an incredible book that I would like to share with you all! Now, I have been reading Spiritual books for years, yet from the beginning I could tell I had something very special in my hands. Also, the timing could not be better since we will be learning about many different mystics in the months to come through Spirit Expressing. I'd like to share about one of my very favorite Spiritual leaders—Osho, and why I think anyone on the path to Spiritual enlightenment should take some time and learn a bit about this fascinating man.

Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic is just that: a story about a man paving the way for a deeper understanding of Spirituality in unconventional ways. Osho 1931-1990, was born in India and from a very early age would sit quietly in meditation. His unerringly wise Grandmother asked that adults leave Osho alone so that he may develop freely without ideas and attitudes from others that would sway his own natural tendencies. Osho grew up next to a serene lake and would spend hours on end meditating at its shores. This early self-discipline led to his experience of enlightenment at the age of 21.

Osho's central message revolves considerably on meditation. He believes that we need to be of one world where wisdom of the East meets action andoshobook.jpg manifestation of the West. In one passage Osho states, "Mediation means the art of being alone, and love means the art of being together. The whole person is one who knows both and who is capable of moving from one to the other as easily as possible….In meditation you breathe in, in love you breathe out. And with love and meditation together your breath is complete, entire, is whole."

Osho studied religion and philosophy in several of India's top schools to be able to speak in a clear, well informed manner to the religious leaders that he knew he would later be challenging. Osho stated that we should preserve the teachings of the great religions, but felt that the center of any Spiritual quest toward becoming a whole person started within, through meditation and letting go of old dogma that only clouds one's Truth. Despite resistance, he went on to teach millions a technique he created called Dynamic Meditation. This technique is very much for the Western mind which finds it difficult to relax into complete silence.

Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic is the perfect book to introduce you to this great spiritual teacher. At Wings Bookstore we also carry many of Osho's other books that may inspire you toward your true awakening. If you enjoy this book as much as I did, why not join me in creating an Osho discussion group at Wings…I'd love to hear from you.

Insomnia; Unwinding the Mind

By Osho

OshoIn New York, at least 30 of the people cannot sleep without tranquilizers. [This was written way before 9/11/01.] Psychologists believe that if this condition prevails for the next hundred years, not a single person will be able to sleep without medication. People have completely lost sleep. If a man who has lost sleep were to ask you how you go to sleep, and your answer were, "All I do is put my head on the pillow and fall asleep," he will not believe you. He will find this impossible and suspect there must be some trick to it he doesn't know--because he lays his head on the pillow, too, and nothing happens.

All You Ever Wanted To Know About Love

Love is a basic emotion, yet you cannot plan to fall in love or create conditions for being in love. It is something over which you have no control. Either you fall in love or you do not. It is ordained. Ramakrishna explains this with the following analogy: "When a huge tidal wave comes, all the little brooks and ditches become full to the brim without any effort or consciousness on their own part”.

However, there are some criteria for judging whether one is in love or not.

The first test is that you do not want exclusive possession of the object of your love. You wish the world to know of your love. You could declare your love from the rooftop. And you wish to do or say whatever makes the person you love happy. M K Gandhi said: "Love and exclusive possession can never go together. Theoretically where there is perfect love, there must be perfect non-possession”.

The second test of love is that there can be no bargain. It does not recognise reward or punishment. Love itself is a merit, and itself its own reward. Beyond itself love seeks neither cause nor outcome; the outcome of it is one with the practice of it.

You love something or someone for its own sake and not because you want or desire a favour in return. Love is not a means to some ephemeral or non-ephemeral end, but is an end in itself. Love is not a response to a certain positive situation. You can go on loving... for when you give your love it comes back millions of times more.

The notion of giving is so consequential to love that "if you do not give it, it goes, it becomes dead, it becomes a dead weight on you. It becomes hatred — it turns into its very opposite. It becomes fear, it becomes jealousy, it becomes possessiveness”, said Osho.

The third test of real love is the annihilation of the ego.

It obliterates the distinction between the self and the other by an unconditional surrender to the other; rather it is a total merger, a complete synthesis with the beloved.

In true love the lover and the beloved are one. The sense of your own identity and individuality vanishes. The other, therefore, does not place a limit on the lover’s freedom; rather, communion with the beloved leads to unbound freedom. It frees us from limits imposed on us by our ahamkara — ego.

The fourth test of real love is that it knows no fear. Fear could be of unfulfilled desires. If your love springs from fear of punishment, or from your desires being fulfilled, then it is no love at all. Love and fear are incompatible, because in love there is no place for desire.

The fifth test of love is that you love what you consider to be the best. Therefore, the beloved person, object, or ideal is unique. It is the highest from the perspective of the lover; from others’ perspective it may not be so. For others some other ideal could be higher than this one. But for the lover the beloved is the best.

The sixth test of real love is that the lover does not so much believe in pedantic and powerless reason which merely argues but is not able to establish a direct contact with the beloved.

The lover gives up the fruitless intellectual groping in the dark, and trusts his own direct experience. He does not give reasons and argu-ments, nor depend upon inference but depends on direct perception and lived life experience.

The writer is head, department of philosophy, Delhi University.
